Healthy and delicious apple crisp crumble recipe rich in calcium, iron, protein, Vitamin A, B, C, K, fiber, potassium, healthy fats, polyphenols, antioxidants, magnesium, phosphorus, niacin, riboflavin, and thiamin. We make this traditional dish with healthy ingredients so it is guilt-free.

How We Came About This Healthy Apple Crisp Crumble

The Idea

We love eating apples and they are very nutritious. However, most of the apple crisp crumble recipes are calling for not so nutritious ingredients such as all-purpose flour, sugar, and butter to name a few. We wanted to enjoy a delicious but at the same time healthy apple crisp. So, we began playing with healthier ingredients.

The Experiment

We tried different flours and settled on coconut flour. It just has that sweet nice flavor that when combined with grounded cinnamon is a combination to die for. We substitute butter with the healthier alternative of coconut oil and reduced the amount in the recipe. To compensate for less butter and less fat we added applesauce. After all, we are eating an apple delish! We eliminated all the added sugar in the recipe because we are using naturally sweet apples and coconut flour that has a little bit of sweet taste. Hence, this recipe has no added sugar and less fat than traditional recipes.

Why We Named The Recipe Apple Crisp Crumble

We did several variations and trials of the crisp until we finally liked the proportions described in the recipe card. Not too thick of a crust, not too crumbly, not too squishy mushy, but just right! We already pointed out that the crust is healthy. While on the crust topping topic, here is how we came about the name “apple crisp crumble”.

  • Cobbler – is a fruit baked dish with thick crust on top of the fruit. It is dough-like thick topping
  • Crumble – is a fruit baked dish made with butter, sugar, and flour
  • Crisp – is a fruit baked dish that has thin crust and usually has oats

Based on the definitions above, we decided to combine the crumble with the crisp for a perfect combination of a healthy apple crisp crumble! We hope that you try this healthy apple crisp crumble and leave us a comment below on how you like it. Check out our apple crisp without any oil in a slow cooker recipe.

Ingredients For Healthy Apple Crisp Crumble

Fresh Apples

We use fresh naturally sweet apples to make this delicious and healthy apple crisp. We like Pink Lady, Gala, and Honey crisp apples for both the applesauce and apple crisp crumble. This is the link on how to make applesauce from fresh apples. If you want to cut some time from making applesauce from scratch you can just use store-bought. However, I find it easier to make my own as it is an extra snack for the kids. I also like to eat food I know what I have put into. Some store-bought applesauce has additives, preservatives, and whatnot. It is super easy to make applesauce so I just do it myself.

Apples are great healthy ingredients. They are rich in Vitamin C, K, fiber, potassium, and polyphenols which is an antioxidant. There is a reason why you will hear the saying “One apple a day, keeps your doctor away”. Sometimes it gets old to give the kids and including myself fresh apples. That is when I diversify. When I make the applesauce and the apple crisp, the kids first get to eat the apple peels as a snack while we are cooking. Then, they get to have an apple crisp dessert after dinner and applesauce for a snack when they get hungry. That way, they don’t feel like they are eating apples all day long.

Lime

We use lime juice in this recipe for extra flavor with the apples. Be careful not to include too much lime juice as the apple crisp will become sour. You can also use lemon as a substitute. Whatever you have handy will do for this recipe. Those citrus fruits are great antioxidants and have an abundance of Vitamin C.

Old Fashioned Whole Grain Rolled Oats

We use old fashioned whole grain oats to add extra crunchy and crispy taste to the apple crumble. If you are gluten sensitive, ensure that the oats you use are gluten-free. Oats are naturally gluten-free, but sometimes they can be introduced to contaminants. Hence, double-check the oats you buy from the store if you are gluten sensitive. Oats are a great source of vitamins, minerals, fiber, and antioxidants.

Coconut Flour For Healthy Apple Crisp Crumble

We selected coconut flour from all other flours for this recipe, as it combines really well with the taste of apples and cinnamon. It adds an extra sweet flavor and fine powder texture to the crisp of the apples. Coconut flour is a great source of healthy fats, fiber, protein, and iron. If you are gluten sensitive, then coconut flour is your friend. Although this flour is rich in protein, it does not have gluten.

Coconut Oil

We use coconut oil as a substitute to the traditional butter used for many apple crisps out there. Coconut oil is rich in heart-healthy fats. If you don’t want to use oil at all in this recipe, just increase the applesauce amount called out in the recipe card.

Ground Cinnamon

Cinnamon and apples are like bread and butter. They go together hand in hand. We use cinnamon for the apples, for the crisp and for the applesauce. That way it blends better with the individual ingredients we use in the recipe. Ground cinnamon is a tasty spice that is a great source of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, thiamin, niacin, Vitamin A and B, and antioxidants.

How To Serve It

Some people like serving apple crisp with ice cream. You know us by now. We opt for healthy alternatives. Hence, we made an apple crisp smoothie, apple crisp pudding, and apple crisp yogurt pudding. Check them out and let us know what you think!

Equipment

We like making this delicious healthy apple crisp crumble in a ceramic baking dish. There aren’t really that many kitchen tools you need to make this recipe. I used a knife, cutting board, measuring set, utensil set, and mixing bowl which for the most part households already have. If you want to simplify your life, then you can invest in apple corer, peeler, and mandoline.

Notes

  • If you are not a fan of coconut oil, then omit it altogether. Use applesauce instead.
  • We use 1/4 cup coconut oil that is already in a liquid state, meaning we already melted it.
  • We recommend making your own applesauce as the store-bought has preservatives, additives, etc.
  • We selected coconut flour for this recipe due to its flavor and texture. We suggest not substitute with other flours.
  • We are extremely excited to announce we are now using the saferecipeguide.org guidelines to make our recipe safe-friendly. We will slowly be incorporating the safe recipe guidelines into our recipe instructions!
