Amazingly delicious apple chips recipe that only takes 15 mins of your time. 1 ingredient recipe packed with nutrient-dense vitamins and minerals.
Nutritious Apple Chips Snack
You probably have heard the saying “One apple a day, keeps the doctor away”. There is a reason behind this wisdom. Apples are packed with so many nutrients. They are rich in vitamin A and C. Apples have lots of fiber, polyphenols, potassium, calcium, and iron. They are also a great source of antioxidants, including quercetin, catechin, and chlorogenic acid. In addition, apples are low in sodium, fat, calories, and cholesterol. No wonder we hear about the “golden apple tree” in folklore tales. Apples are just a nutrient gift from the earth. With our apple chips recipe, we offer you another way of indulging the deliciousness of apples and reaping their nutritious benefits.
Type Of Apples for Best Apple Chips
Our mouth-watering apple chips recipe is made out of only 1 ingredient – apples. Apples are just sweet and tasty on their own and don’t need additives for flavor. We don’t add any sugar additives, sweeteners, preservatives, etc. We don’t even add cinnamon to preserve the natural taste of apples. As a result, we chose apples that are naturally sweet such as Gala, Pink Lady, Fuji, and Honeycrisp. Now, if you are tart taste lover, check out the Granny Smith and McIntosh types of apples. My kids love sweets, so making our apple chips from sweet apples is like giving them candy. Oh, yes – healthy candy (double score!!)
Peeling The Apples
We like our chips with peeled apples. I use a knife to peel the apples, but a peeler can be helpful too. I guess I am just a creature of old habits and feel most comfortable with my knife. When I peel the apples, my kids love to eat the peels fresh so we don’t throw away food filled with vitamins. I make the apple chips with their help, so while we make the chips they eat the peels. It is also a great incentive for them to eat the apple chips afterward since they helped in the making.
Slicing the Apples
We like our apple chips in widget like slices. Hence, we cut the apples in half and then tiny slice the apple. Check out our apple chips recipe video for a visual aid on how we slice our apple chips. Mandoline slicer may be helpful here. If you prefer, you can also slice the pieces in circles. Since we eat first with eyes, my kids are used to see widget sliced fruit chips. This is because they love eating mango chips and are used to those types of slices. Hence, I make our apple chips look like the mango chips and the kids love it. My family likes the chips in tiny slices to make it extra crunchy and crisp. That is also the reason we dry the chips for longer (about 10-12 hours) to make it crispier.
How Long To Dry The Apple Slices
We like our apple chips crispy and crunchy. Hence, I dehydrate the apples for more than 10 hours. I periodically go and try the apple chips to ensure they are crispy as we like them. If you like a chewier snack, then dehydrate the apple slices less. We suggest checking on the slices periodically to find the best time for your likeness. Also, depending on the dehydrator, the altitude you live in, air moisture, etc drying hours may vary. Another big drying time factor is how thick your slices are. The thicker the slices the longer the drying time. Just experiment with the time until you like the output!

Great Recipe When You Have Hoards Of Apples
The United States grows enormous amounts of apples each year. I believe we are second in the world in apple production. Hence, we have so many apples, that sometimes people end up with loads of apples without knowing what to do with them. Apple chips are a great way to preserve apples prior to getting spoiled. When you make the apple chips you can store it for months in air-tight containers. In addition to our apple chips, here are couple more ideas on how to use apples before they spoil:
- Make applesauce
- Make juice
Equipment
For this recipe, we use a dehydrator. I have been using Excalibur dehydrator for over 10 years. The dehydrator has been a great kitchen appliance investment for our family. We have enjoyed fruit chips, crackers, and jerky made from real ingredients. We can’t be happier with our dehydrator! The rest of the tools are basic such as a knife and a cutting board. You can also get fancy with a peeler, mandoline, and a coring tool.

Dried Apple Chips
Ingredients

Instructions
Prep
- Wash hands with soap and water. Check out our article about how to wash hands properly
- Scrub about 7 apples with a clean vegetable brush under running water.
- Depending on the size of the apples and the thickness of the slices you like, you may need more or fewer apples.
- Cut each apple in 2 halves around the middle seed core
- Peel off the skin of the apples
- Cut the apple halves in as thin slices as you like them. My family likes thin slices as they are crispier.
Dehydrate
- Arrange the apple slices into the dehydrator's sheets
- Put the dehydrator's trays full with apple slices back into the dehydrator. Close the dehydrator's lid.
- Depending on the type of dehydrator you are using choose about 140 Fahrenheit degrees for drying. On my dehydrator, I chose the "Fruits" option that gets me the 140 degrees Fahrenheit (60 degrees Celsius)
- I dry our apple chips for about 10-12 hours. We love them crispy and crunchy. If you prefer the snack chewier, then dry them for less time.
- Enjoy!

Notes
- I wash, peel, and cut one apple at a time. So, if I am done after the 6th apple, then I stop rather than pre-cutting more apples than I might need.
- Left overs -I use the left overs to give to my kids as fresh fruit, add to smoothies, yogurt, etc.
- After I fill up the dehydrator’s sheets, there might be left overs from the last apple I cut up
- My kids love helping me cutting the apples and they eat all the peels from the apples. Score for me, as there are lots of vitamins in the peels.
- Periodically check the apples to see how crispy and crunchy you like them
- We are extremely excited to announce we are now using the saferecipeguide.org guidelines to make our recipe safe-friendly. We will slowly be incorporating the safe recipe guidelines into our recipe instructions!
