How We Came About Making Slow Cooker Apple Crisp
I like making apple crisp. It is healthy and delicious. I usually make it in the oven but decided to see how it will turn out in the slow cooker. I also wanted to try making the apple crisp without oil. In this recipe, I don’t even use an oil spray to prevent apples from sticking on the inside of the slow cooker. Instead, just make sure the top apples don’t touch the walls too much. My husband doesn’t like the oats in the crust and I wanted to use something healthy as a substitute. Hence, how the Malt-O-Meal hot wheat cereal made its way into the recipe. And now you know how this slow-cooked apple crisp was born.
How To Serve The Slow Cooked Apple Crisp
We like eating the apple crisp right after it is done. It is still warm and nice. Some people like putting ice cream as a topping. We use plain yogurt instead. In this spirit, check out our apple crisp yogurt pudding. It is made with apple crisp and plain yogurt into a pudding. My kids like it better than just putting topping over the apple crisp. We also have a variation of this pudding with sesame milk. The apple crisp pudding with sesame milk is smooth and really pleasant. We used vanilla flavored sesame milk. Serve it with some ice and it is like a shake. Not sure yet? Then try our apple crisp smoothie!
Ingredients For Slow Cooker Apple Crisp
Fresh Apples And Applesauce
We use fresh naturally sweet apples to make this delicious and healthy apple crisp. We like Pink Lady, Gala, and Honey crisp apples for both the applesauce and apple crisp crumble. This is the link on how to make applesauce from fresh apples. If you want to cut some time from making applesauce from scratch you can just use store-bought. However, I find it easier to make my own as it is an extra snack for the kids. I also like to eat food I know what I have put into. Some store-bought applesauce has additives, preservatives, and whatnot. It is super easy to make applesauce so I just do it myself.
Apples are great healthy ingredients. They are rich in Vitamin C, K, fiber, potassium, and polyphenols which is an antioxidant. There is a reason why you will hear the saying “One apple a day, keeps your doctor away”. Sometimes it gets old to give the kids and including myself fresh apples. That is when I diversify. When I make the applesauce and the apple crisp, the kids first get to eat the apple peels as a snack while we are cooking. Then, they get to have an apple crisp dessert after dinner and applesauce for a snack when they get hungry. That way, they don’t feel like they are eating apples all day long.
Lime
We use lime juice in this recipe for extra flavor with the apples. Be careful not to include too much lime juice as the apple crisp will become sour. You can also use lemon as a substitute. Whatever you have handy will do for this recipe. Those citrus fruits are great antioxidants and have an abundance of Vitamin C.
Malt-O-Meal Hot Wheat Cereal
We use Malt-O-Meal Hot Wheat Cereal to add fine taste to the apple crisp. We use the original plain version of the cereal. If you are gluten sensitive, you can add gluten-free oats instead. Malt-O-Meal Hot Wheat Cereal provides a good source of folic acid, calcium, thiamin, phosphorus, riboflavin, niacin, iron, and Vitamin B6. It also has magnesium, zinc, copper, and selenium. Malt-O-Meal Hot What Cereal is also very low in saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium
Coconut Flour For Healthy Apple Crisp Crumble
Optional: Coconut Oil
We do not use coconut oil in this version of the recipe. Check out our oven apple crisp crumble where we use coconut oil for the crust. If you want to make the crust smoother and more fluid, we suggest using coconut oil as opposed to butter. Coconut oil is rich in heart-healthy fats.
Ground Cinnamon
Cinnamon and apples are like bread and butter. They go together hand in hand. We use cinnamon for the apples, for the crisp and for the applesauce. That way it blends better with the individual ingredients we use in the recipe. Also, if you like the apples to be less brown, then just reduce the ground cinnamon from 1/2 tsp to 1/4. I try using ground cinnamon as much as I can as it is very nutritious. Ground cinnamon is a tasty spice that is a great source of calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, riboflavin, thiamin, niacin, Vitamin A and B, and antioxidants.
Equipment
This recipe is made using a slow cooker or also known as a crockpot. We use the slow cooker so the flavors blend together for longer. The apples are more tender when cooked with the crockpot as opposed to the traditional oven. It is also convenient to use a slow cooker if you know you will be away for about 2 hours to return to deliciously smelling home. The rest of the kitchen appliances are basic tools you may already have such as a knife, cutting board, measuring set, and mixing bowls. You can upgrade your kitchen with more specialized tools to help you with this recipe such as apple corer, peeler, and mandoline.

Notes
- Try to not have apples on the top that are next to the slow cooker walls. They will stick to the walls.
- Spray with avocado oil to ensure the apples don’t stick to the walls of the slow cooker.
- We recommend making your own applesauce as the store-bought has preservatives, additives, etc.
- We selected coconut flour for this recipe due to its flavor and texture. We suggest not substitute with other flours.
- You can add 1/4 cup coconut oil to the crust to get it smoother. I usually avoid it when serving to people who are on a low calories diet and are afraid of eating fats.
- We are extremely excited to announce we are now using the saferecipeguide.org guidelines to make our recipe safe-friendly. We will slowly be incorporating the safe recipe guidelines into our recipe instructions!
