In this blog, we will talk about physiological orthodontics, differences between physiological and traditional orthodontics, an example of a physiological orthodontics process one goes thorough and health benefits one can experience from physiological orthodontics. We are building on top of our “Breathing relation to dental and overall health” and “Dental Issues” blogs to talk about what can you do to fix dental issues and mouth breathing.

 

 

Quick Background

As it turned out, my teeth arch is too narrow, squeezing my tongue in a tight space as a result of which my tongue partially blocks my airways. Hence, my body tries to compensate for lack of oxygen by breathing through the mouth (as opposed to the nose). Lack of oxygen leads to both physical deformations (i.e. face, shoulders posture) and mental dysfunctions. Who would have known that my narrow teeth arch could impact my entire body and overall health so much! The solution?? – a physiological orthodontics intervention. This blog is to explain what the procedure is and the steps I took to fix my dental and breathing issues.

Difference between traditional and physiological orthodontics

I personally didn’t know there was physiological orthodontics. I got lucky that my current dentists specializes in physiological orthodontics and that is how I learned about it. Throughout the years I was offered to have invisalign braces which I thought was too inefficient. I also went to a traditional orthodontics consolation but gave up on the idea when the orthodontist told me he needed to pull teeth out. Few years ago, I was presented with the physiological orthodontics approach. In a nutshell here are the differences between traditional and physiological orthodontics. There are so many more benefits of having physiological than traditional orthodontics procedure done.

In summary, physiological orthodontics addresses many issues at the same time. One of the dentists assistants in the office is actually going through the physiological orthodontics even though she already went through the traditional orthodontics process many years ago. She realized she has straight teeth, but there is much more into having a perfect dental health. This is a site that gives more information on the physiological orthodontics.

Benefits of physiological orthodontics procedure

There are many benefits one can experience after having physiological orthodontics procedure.

Benefits I personally experienced:

  • Appropriate space for the tongue to be in the correct position allowing for nasal breathing. My airway was partially blocked by the tongue and I was mouth breathing. Mouth breathing deprived my body from precious and needed oxygen.
  • Aligned bite that eliminates teeth stress. My teeth would collapse against each other and chop off some of the surface from the pressure caused by misaligned bite and crocked teeth. Furthermore, aligned bite by itself will eliminate lots of dental work (i.e. crowns, root canals)
  • Allow for better teeth cleaning (especially flossing) which will improve my gum health. Also, it will reduce the chance for cavities between the teeth.
  • Reduce muscle tension and alleviate headache and shoulder pain

Process Steps

These are the steps I had to go through in my case to fix my dental issues and get better dental health. Everyone is different so the process may vary depending on your individual case.

  1. A dental appliance is placed on top and bottom teeth. The upper appliance is to push my upper teeth arch forward and expand it. The bottom appliance is to allow the bottom jaw to follow and align with the upper teeth. It also expands the bottom teeth arch to free up room for the tongue.
  2. An extra appliance (like a wire) is install on top and bottom of the teeth arches to force the tongue in a correct position.
  3. Braces are placed to straighten up the teeth and align all teeth in best position

What was required from me through the process

  • I wore the expanding dental appliances for 6 months. The length of the treatment depends on your individual case
  • I have been wearing braces for 13 months now. The expectation is that I will need to wear the braces for another 4-6 months. Again, the length of the treatment depends on individual cases. In contrast, the physiological procedure I am going through is much shorter than the 4-5 years timelines I have heard from people who went through traditional orthodontics
  • When eating I need to ensure my tongue is in the correct position as explained by my dentist
  • Mindfully/intentionally staying with closed lips. This ensures I am breathing through the nose.
  • Breathing through the nose as much as possible. I used nasal strips and nasal spray to get rid of the extra mucous and open up my nostrils

Final Thoughts

There are major differences between traditional and physiological orthodontics. The benefits and holistic approach the physiological orthodontics offers are far more than the traditional. I am still going through the final stages of the procedure, but have already experienced major health benefits. I breath easier, sleep better, feel better, have more energy, and have less gum bleeding. It is amazing what a difference one simple dental procedure can make to one’s overall health.
